Search Tags (Desktop and Advanced Editor)

Modified on Sat, 14 Jun, 2025 at 10:47 AM

Sometimes it would be very helpful to be able to find all of a particular tag type, for example, so that they can all be handled at the same time.  The Search Tags feature makes this possible.

  1. Navigate to the Windows tab on the ribbon and choose Search Tags (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+F, or use the Active Tools window).  For more information about the Active Tools window, read the article on Accessibility, Navigation, and Use of CommonLook PDF.

  2. When the panel opens, begin typing the tag type in the text field.
The field is highlighted in the Search Tags panel.
  3. When the dropdown list of tags appears, choose the correct tag from the list.
  4. Use the Advanced Options and Find options menus to set other search parameters as needed. (The options are explained below.)

  5. One the parameters have all been set, click the Search button.
The Search button is highlighted in the Search Tags panel.
  6.  When the search is complete, the found tags will be listed in the search panel.  Select them and then perform the necessary function for remediation.

Search Tags - Advanced Options

  1. Search in All Tags - CommonLook will look in the entire document for the tag type you're searching for.
  2. Search in Selected Tags - CommonLook will look within tags that you've selected in the Tags tree for the particular tag type you want.  (Can be helpful, for example, to find all of the List tags in a Table to check them and verify that they've been assembled correctly.)
  3. Page From/ Page To - Search for a particular tag type within a range of pages.

Search Tags - Find Options:

To further refine your search, you can add additional rules or parameters to your search.

  1. Choose "Add rule" (or "Add group").
The Add Rule button is highlighted in the Search Tags Find Options panel.
  2. Navigate to and expand the Field menu.
The field menu is expanded to show various options.
  3. Choose the "Operator" - "is" or "is not."
  4. In the "Value" field, type in the necessary value. (As you begin to type, a drop-down menu will open.  Select the option you need.  (Refer to the screenshot and description below.)
  5. Run your search

In the screenshot below, the Options and Properties section is filled out.  The search has been set up to find all TD tags in the document.  In Options and Properties, the rule has been created to find TDs whose Parent tag is TR.
