Verification Failure: Untagged Annotations

Modified on Fri, 26 Jun at 4:18 PM

Issue

After running a verification, you receive the following failure: "An untagged annotation has been detected."

Causes

When an annotation for either a form or a link is artifacted, people using assistive technology will not be able to interact with the annotation. For example, if a form annotation is artifacted, assistive technology users may not be able to fill in the form or know it is there.  For a link annotation, assistive technology users may not be able to activate the link or know there is a link present.

Affected Users

All assistive technology users.

Accessibility Guidelines

PDF/UA, together with ISO 32000, requires form annotations to be represented in the tag tree so that all users, regardless of how they navigate the document, receive a consistent, predictable, and fully accessible experience.

Resolution Steps

If you run a verification and discover that you have untagged form or link annotations, you will need to:

  1. Ensure your selection settings are set to include Exact, Tagged and Untagged Content.
  2. Annotations and associated text in their respective tags (Form or Link)
