Overview

Watermarks, such as logos or text, are images placed over a document to communicate information. If a watermark conveys meaningful information, it only needs to be tagged once in the tags tree, even if it appears on multiple pages. Choose a location in the reading order where it makes the most sense, such as where it first or last appears. If the watermark is purely decorative, artifact it instead.

Where you place the watermark tag depends on how important it is. For example, a "Confidential" watermark should be tagged near the beginning of the reading order so users know immediately that the document contains confidential information. A less important watermark, such as a company logo, can be tagged near the end of the reading order.

Prerequisites 

Follow these steps when documents have watermarks.

Steps to Follow

1.  Change the setting selections to only select images.
2.  Highlight or select the watermark in the physical view. (Only the paths should be selected).
3.  With the Insert Tag tab selected, select Figure, this will place all the paths in a Figure tag.
4.  Add Actual text to the properties of the figure tag reflecting the information in the watermark.
5.  Move the watermark to the appropriate place in the tags tree.  

Note:  If the watermark appears on several pages, you only need to tag it once and Allyant all other times it appears in the document.

Common Problems

Some watermarks are not composed of graphical elements (Paths) and therefore should not be placed in a figure tag with alternative text. These watermarks should be placed into span tags and provided with alternative text.
